Building an email list of customers and potential customers is THE number one thing you can do for your business. Despite what some people have taught over the years, having a good email list is and emailing it constantly is the best way to show how successful a business will be.
Why? Here are the main reasons.
Reason #1: Hot Traffic
What do you think of when you think of “cold calling?” Probably a telemarketer calling you at 6pm at night while you’re eating dinner, right?
Well any kind of “cold” marketing is where you’re reaching out to someone for the first time. That may be emailing, someone visiting your website from Google, etc.
But if you build an email list and build a relationship with them, they warm up to you. They start to like you and trust you, and they become much more likely to buy from you.
Reason #2: Consistent Traffic
Not only do people on your list come to like you better- they also provide the most consistent source of traffic out there. Other things like SEO and paid advertising are great, but building a list allows you to instantly send people to an offer.
And since getting traffic is one of the hardest parts of running an online business, you’re setting yourself up for failure without it.
Reason #3: Automated Sales
There are two ways to use an email marketing company. You can either set up messages to go out as a broadcast (meaning it’s not part of a sequence), or you can set up automated messages. The automatic messages allow you to essentially write an email once and then your subscribers will always see it when they sign up.
This allows you to keep getting sales from your emails- all you have to do is focus on getting more subscribers. As more and more come in, you’ll get sales from people viewing your automatic messages and purchasing your product or service.
With that, let’s talk about how to get started.
Setting Up Your Email List
There are a few major service providers to look into. They all work fine, so it’s mainly a matter of personal preference regarding prices, the layout of the system, what kind of services/products you promote, etc.
Probably the most popular, AWeber is extremely reliable and easy to use. They have a great customer support program and want to make sure you have everything you need to succeed.
You can start using AWeber with a $1 trial. This lets you play around with it for a month and get profitable before your first “real” bill hits for about $19.
MailChimp is okay if you’re on a tight budget, but it has a few serious drawbacks. The biggest one is that MailChimp doesn’t allow to you just send any affiliate link you want. They have a list of types of offers that you can’t promote, plus you can’t promote anything with a “blacklisted” URL.
If you don’t mail any affiliate offers, this can be a good choice. Just keep in mind that if you change your mind in the future, you may need to switch to another provider.
Constant Contact is great if you want a very professional-looking newsletter. Other services (including the two above) can do this as well, but CC tends to look a little better than the others.
Again, it’s really just about personal preference and what best fits your home business.
