How to Work From Home as a Graphic Designer

Ever since the use of the Internet grew and spread globally, there has been a great demand for graphic designers. Learning how to work from home as a graphic designer is a good way of earning a better income, while getting a high degree of job satisfaction.

Skills and Qualifications

Depending on the kind of output and medium a client prefers, a homebased graphic designer may need skills that can be loosely categorized as follows:

  • Artistic and/or visual creativity
  • High familiarity with the use of computer equipment and graphics manipulation software
  • Working knowledge of advertising and marketing terminologies for traditional media (print and TV) and online media
  • Expertise in the traditional and innovative use of color, images, and design themes

There is no mandatory need for a degree in graphic design. Even those who have not finished high school may find work as a work from home graphic designer, provided they can prove that they have the skills required by a client.

However, it is to the advantage of the individual interested in being able to work from home as a graphic designer to have at least an Associate’s degree in Graphic Design.

  • Conceptualize an overall design theme
  • Create a website, inclusive of theme, layout, and design elements
  • Create marketing collaterals
  • Design logos
  • Create advertising images
  • Produce, edit, and upload short online videos

Remuneration

The income that home based graphic designers earn is dependent on several factors which include:

  • The kind of project or account being handled
  • The state where the job is being done
  • The level of complexity of the job
  • The nature of the job
  • The reputation and experience of the designer

On average, a home based graphic designer may earn $25 per hour (for hour-based projects). Alternatively, the graphic designer may negotiate for a package rate or flat fee that will depend on the scope of work being commissioned.

To get the most out of knowing how to work from home as a graphic designer, take additional courses in digital imaging, typography, hand based drawing, or web design. Having these under your belt will boost your chances of getting the best projects from clients who are willing to pay premium for your services.
