How to Work From Home as a Medical Biller

The young manager
January 18th, 2014

Knowing how to work from home as a medical biller can be a good way to make money and still have time to attend to other matters, such as taking care of your family. Here are some information to help you get started.

Skills and Qualifications

Many high school graduates are able to find work as a medical biller. Having a degree is not a requisite among most clients, although it can be an asset. The usual degree that is ideal for a medical biller to posses would be one in medical billing and health administration, or similarly oriented degrees.

The main expertise required of a medical biller mostly involves being able to work with patients and insurance companies. Towards that end, a medical biller would be most efficient when in possession of the following skills and attributes:

  • Understanding of basic billing systems (Such systems may be provided by the client as installable software, or if the client knows that the telecommuting biller already has a lot of related experience, the medical biller may be asked to come up with his/her own billing systems and procedures.)
  • Working knowledge of common medical terms
  • Working knowledge of insurance policies and terms
  • Ability to work with various software that can be used for medical billing purposes

Employment Sectors to Target

The industries and sectors that have the highest demand for medical billers, telecommuters or not, consist of:

  • medical and healthcare facilities ranging from spas and clinics, to hospitals
  • non-profit organizations that provide subsidized health care services
  • individual medical practitioners such as chiropractors, dentists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dermatologists, and even plastic surgeons

Job Responsibilities

Across the nation, medical billers, whether a regular office-based employee or working from home, have the following job responsibilities:

  • Calculating prices for medical services rendered, in coordination with concerned insurance agencies
  • Determining who will be responsible for the payment of the services
  • Getting the correct bill for payment remittance
  • Sending out invoices to patients
  • Making follow ups for payment requests
  • Replying to patient inquiries regarding the bills they need to pay

In addition, minor tasks such as keeping spreadsheet or simple database records for clients may also be required.

Remuneration

The greater the level of experience of a medical biller (example: having been able to work as a regular employee in a hospital setting), and the higher the relevant educational attainment, the higher the pay.

For medical billers who work from home, remuneration may come in the form of being paid per claim.  The range for being paid per billing claim is around $0.10 to $0.30 per claim, depending on such variables as who the client is, and which state the job is being performed.

Getting  the Competitive Edge

In order to learn how to work from home as a medical biller as efficiently and profitably as possible, it’s highly recommended to be proficient in using computer systems and taking up advanced courses that will enable you to acquire useful skills and knowledge.
