How To Work From Home As A Teen Counselor

Teen Counselor
June 27th, 2014

Teen counselors work with adolescents who have emotional, behavioral, and other developmental issues. These teens are in educational institutions and/or religious denominations and are typically sponsored by community and juvenile detention centers, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Those who want fulfillment in being able to help teenagers in their development into adulthood will do well in this kind of career.

What is a Teen Counselor?

A teen counselor, also known as a youth counselor, is an individual who regularly work with troubled youth. He or she helps teenagers manage stress, develop coping mechanisms, and deal with family, peer, and societal pressures in a responsible, calm, and mature manner.

He or she works to meet the physical, mental, and emotional needs of adolescents in the fast-paced, demanding, and often tumultuous teenage years by offering support, counseling, motivation, crisis intervention, and companionship during interaction.

Job Responsibilities of a Teen Counselor

The kind of facility or organization that a teen counselor is involved with partly determines his or her responsibilities. He or she can work independently or be part of a team which includes teachers, criminal justice officers, social workers, psychologists, and religious clergy.

Although teen counselors can work from home as independent contractors, they sometimes travel to meet parents of teenagers at their homes or schools. Whether or not the teen counselor is home-based, there are several responsibilities which he or she has to comply with:

  • Interviewing teenager clients together with their families.
  • Meeting with these people on a regular, often weekly, basis.
  • Creating treatment programs which are personalized.
  • Recommending appropriate social services if necessary.
  • Disciplining, interacting, and supervising activities for youth in juvenile detention centers.
  • Implementing treatments such as behavioral therapy.
  • Updating documents and writing progress reports on teenagers being cared for.
  • Initiating worthwhile leisurely activities such as sports and athletic competitions, painting, arts and crafts workshops, and screenings of films that impart positive values.
  • Intervention in rehabilitation of individual youth or youth groups that have had involvement with criminal situations such as shoplifting, burglary, etc.
  • Taking charge of the security and safety of at-risk teenagers by providing structured environments for them to live in.
  • Monitoring the academic progress of troubled teens and helping them achieve educational goals.
  • Helping build trust, sincerity, and accountability amongst teenagers and their peer groups.
  • Competent to deal with teenagers of all races, creeds, socio-economic backgrounds, educational attainment, and genders.

Skills Needed to Become a Teen Counselor

Becoming a teen counselor requires completion of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or child education. Assuming that such a degree has been completed, the following skills would still be required of a teen counselor:

  • Have a thorough understanding of psychological principles and theories.
  • Possess excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Desire to help teenagers.
  • Flexible.
  • Confident, patient, and has a well-balanced self-esteem.
  • Emotionally and mentally mature.
  • Ability to conduct best practices regarding the abuse of drugs, alcohol or other substances, juvenile delinquency, and crime prevention.
  • Recognize and value the key concepts and their complexities in relation to socio-cultural diversities.
  • Approaches issues, problems, and concerns calmly, objectively, and creatively.
  • Work with organizations which advocate protection, security, safety, and reformation of adolescent delinquents.

Where to Find Teen Counseling Jobs

Teen counselors can find jobs or projects from online job boards, social media sites, and bulletin boards of schools, churches, and socio-civic organizations. However, home-based teen counselors provide the solution to challenges such as locations of sessions, cancellation of appointments due to an emergency or illness, personal crisis, lack of transportation access, and disability.

It is often more convenient to have teen counselors who provide counseling and other services at home since people feel more relaxed in that setting. Knowing how to work from home as a teen counselor is advantageous to the counselor in terms of time, effort, and expenses for transportation purposes. It also lifts the restrictions felt by teenagers when therapy is done in an office or a clinical environment such as a hospital or school.
