telemarketer
January 18th, 2014

Conveying a lively and friendly personality on the phone while talking to someone who’s ready to press the End button on their mobile phone is no easy feat. However, it is possible to acquire such skills which are essential to a telemarketer. If you want to know how to work from home as a telemarketer, this article can help you.

Skills and Qualifications

It is  highly possible even for those who are not highly sociable to work as a telemarketer.  Specialized training is normally provided to new telemarketers. Apart from the product details relative to the account they are handling, they are also usually taught how to make the best use of their voice to get a customer’s attention and interest.

That being said, the following skills and qualifications are fundamental to the job of a telemarketer:

  • Clear and pleasant speaking voice
  • Self-confidence
  • Excellent command of the English language, neutral accent preferable
  • Ability to communicate friendliness through controlled “voice acting”
  • Ability to memorize scripts or spiels and not deviate from them, or conversely, innovate upon them, as applicable
  • Assertiveness or aggressiveness, depending on the nature of the product or service being marketed

Employment Sectors to Target

These are the sectors and/or industries where telemarketing services are often used:

  • Business-support services industry
  • Banking and finance
  • Retail products industry
  • Fashion and apparel
  • Telecommunications
  • Hotel and travel industries

Job Responsibilities

A telemarketer can have numerous responsibilities, depending on variables such as the kind of account being handled and client expectations. In general though, these are the responsibilities of a homebased telemarketer:

  •  Make cold calls
  •  Create and manage lists of leads
  •  Inform prospective buyers about relevant product or service details of the account being marketed
  •  Reply to questions of the buyers
  • Cross-sell or upsell, depending on client or script specifications
  • Help in script or spiel creation (case-case-basis)

Remuneration

Telemarketers, whether working from home or not, may be paid hourly, per minute, or per call.

Many are also given commissions for every deal closed.  Telemarketers may earn an average of $11 to $20 per hour, depending on the industry they work in, and the state where they work.

Telemarketers who handle accounts in the metal and mineral industry receive higher pay. The commission given to them can either be a flat fee that is agreed upon during the hiring and training phase, or a percentage that is calculated from the telemarketers total sales, or that of the team to which the telemarketer belongs (as applicable).

Getting  the Competitive Edge

Finding out how to work from home as a telemarketer is not hard. What can be difficult is the act of sustaining one’s equilibrium even in a high-pressure job such as telemarketing. Thus, to gain the competitive advantage, boosting your self-confidence, becoming knowledgeable about the product/service you are offering, and knowing how to manage job-related stress properly can help you improve your performance.
