Today’s technology has allowed more and more people to work remotely. This means they can work from home, at the gym, or even on some exotic island in the Caribbean. Employers also love the idea of teleworking because they will be able to cut operating costs, utility bills, and rent.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1 in 4 workers in the US work from home. Between 2005 and 2011, the number of teleworkers grew by 73%. Such phenomenal growth tells us one thing: majority of employees love to work from home.
But what makes a work from home job rewarding? For one, it offers the employees a lot of benefits. In fact, we can think of at least 7 right off the bat.
1. Working from home enables you to achieve balance between work and family.
Employees generally spend between 8 to 12 hours in the office. When you’re away from home this long, it means you don’t have enough time for your loved ones. But if you work from home, you can juggle between work and family effectively because your presence is “there.”
2. It helps you avoid traffic.
You also cut time commuting to and from work, which is a considerable time savings when you think about it. How much time do people spend stuck in traffic? This report says it’s an average of 38 hours a year! If you live in Washington DC or LA, it gets even worse.
3. You’ll save money.
When you work in an office, you have to spend money on gas, a latte and maybe a bagel or two. If you add that all up, just think about how much you can save when you’re just working from home.
4. You’ll become more productive.
The belief that people who work at home tend to become lazy is wrong. You become more productive actually, as long as you steer clear from distractions during work hours such as TV, phone and kids.
5. It’s safer to work at home.
In the office, you’re always around dozens if not hundreds of people who may have the flu, colds or any other contagious disease. When you’re around them, you become susceptible and could very well become ill too. But when you’re at home, you’re just with a few people and the chances of you getting sick is low.
6. You can wear anything you like.
Assuming your job does not entail videoconferencing with your boss or clients all day, working from home allows you to work in your pajamas with or without makeup. You don’t have to waste hours styling your hair or deciding on what to wear.
7. There’ll be less distractions.
When you work from home, you won’t have to deal with nosy co-workers whose only desire is to talk about this and that and preventing you from getting any work done. As mentioned above, so as long as your family understands that you are working, you can definitely keep distractions at bay.
