Work From Home With A Data Entry Job

data entry
December 24th, 2013

If you are looking for a home-based job, you might want to consider data entry work from home. Data entry is a simple job that requires personnel to enter data into a database. The job requires little technical skills.

For this reason, companies have opted to incorporate data entry work to other jobs. A cashier for example has the added job of data entry.

Some of those employers who opted to stick with data entry positions have decided to outsource the job. So now there are plenty of home-based jobs for data entry.

Is it a Scam?

Going through online forums, you will find plenty of concerns about data entry work from home. Data entry job postings can sometimes come off as too good to be true. This raises the question—Are home-based data entry jobs a scam?

As a rule of thumb, if something seems to good to be true, it probably is. Yes there are some scams out there.
One very creative and technically legal scam involves a payment term where the employee can only get paid after doing ten data entry jobs. The employee could work up to nine jobs, and never get the tenth. The scammer prioritizes newly duped employees who are further from the tenth mark.

Not all job postings offering data entry work from home are scams however. There are ways to ensure you are not getting scammed. Do find the time to check if an employer is legitimate with the Federal Trade Commission. Also be on the look out for forums and consumer-protection websites.

The Job Description

One would think the job description is universal. You type in data to a database. Different fields however need different things from data entry personnel.

If you are doing data entry work from home for a research company, the job might involve entering respondents’ answers from questionnaires. In this case, the company’s IT department may have produced an Excel program/template. Otherwise they may opt to provide data entry software for your installation. Other common home-based data entry jobs are medical transcriptions, a variety of billings, etc.

How to Get the Job

First things first—prepare a resume. Every resume guru and forum will tell you that universal resumes are no longer acceptable. The same goes for applying for data entry work from home.

The employer might not care that you had part-time stint as a cashier in Starbucks. They might care if you indicate that you had some data entry experience in that job. You might have also done some other home-based jobs. That could show that you are comfortable with home-based jobs and know what it entails.

What if you go through your resume and find nothing relevant to the position? Then it is all about how you present your experience.

For example, your job at Abercrombie and Fitch as a retail sales agent might be perceived as irrelevant. But what if you have been working in that store every summer for the past three years? That there shows loyalty. Loyalty is something that is universally valued.

Wrap Up

So remember to do a background check on the company first. Find out if it is legitimate. Next find out what a particular data entry posting could involve in terms job description. You could prepare yourself more for the application process and the actual task. Then prepare the appropriate resume and apply! Do all of this and you could be earning money doing data entry work from home while lounging snuggly on your couch.
